A Summer to Remember for TKA Girls Basketball

Girls_BB_2010_01aThis summer has been one to remember for the Girls basketball program at the King's Academy.  One would think that winning multiple district titles and having four straight trips to the FHSAA regional playoffs would allow these lady lions to take the summer off.  Think again... the lady lions basketball program is back at it again with an action packed summer of 2010.  The girls have been in the weight room getting stronger four days a week and have been in the gym for open gyms and at Park Vista High School for summer league in the month of June.

The highlight of the summer came when the team took off for camp on the 24th of June and embarked on a 14 hour drive to Clemson University Team Camp in South Carolina.  The program took two teams and competed admirably in the Varsity and Junior Varsity division.  After team camp the team headed to Hayesville, NC-home of assistant coach Leigh Ann Powers and spent four more days at her childhood home in the mountains.  On June 28th and 29th the team worked at The House of Prayer, a small church in Blairsville, Georgia.  On the two work days, the girls and head coach Richie Leber painted and organized a house used as a food pantry and also built a deck ramp on the back of the food pantry.  Pastor Bill Honaker commented that we were just in time to help get things ready for vacation Bible school.  The last day in North Carolina was highlighted by a hike on the Appalachian Trail and a day of whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River.

Once back from camp most of the team participated in the Little Lady Lion camp at TKA from July 6th through the 9th.  The girl's got the chance to model the skills they have learned from Coach Leber and Powers, and to mentor and teach the future of the Lady Lions Basketball program.  Look out for good things in the future from this young group as they look to build on the experiences they have had in the summer of 2010.
