Jones Leads Lions to District Title

WEST PALM BEACH- Javian Jones wasn’t ready for his high school basketball career to end, and that was evident in the district tournament. The senior star scored 37 points in a semifinal win over American Heritage and poured in 27 more points in the championship game to lead the Lions past Inlet Grove 63-52. The district title sends the Lions to the regional playoffs for the third straight season and is the fifteenth in program history.
While Jones stole the spotlight, his supporting cast was electric at times as well. Junior Isaiah McCoy, a breakout performer this season, scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lions and was too much for the Hurricanes to handle in the paint. Second-leading scorer Matt McPherson was held scoreless in the first half but had nine huge points in the second half to help put Inlet Grove away. In a game that was just 23-21 at the half, the Lions exploded in the second half to lead by as many as 17 points en route to the title.
The victory was the Lions eighth in nine games and propels them to the regional playoffs. They will host second-seeded St. Andrew’s on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
